From Overwhelmed to Unstoppable: How Running 21K Changed My Approach to Business Goals
So last week I did something pretty huge (for me) - I ran my first ever half Marathon!
It was bloody hard!
It was something I wanted to do as a challenge and I'm so proud to have done it. The furthest I have ever previously run before training for this was 10km, and even that was yonks ago (not used that word since I was a teenager - might start using it again!), so it really was a challenge.
From Overwhelming to Achievable
When I first decided to do it - to try and reach my goal of running 21km without stopping, at first it felt pretty overwhelming.... BUT - I didn't focus on the massive end goal. I had a clear training plan that broke everything down into manageable chunks.
Each week, I "just" needed to show up for my scheduled runs. That's it. One run at a time.
The Business Connection
And since i’m all about helping business owners reach your BUSINESS goals (I can feel an analogy coming on!)...
When you look at your big business goals and think "How on earth am I going to get there?"...
You need:
A clear plan that you trust will get you there (like my training plan)
To actually do the steps on the plan
Having the plan in the first place means you're one step closer to being able to do it because the decisions are made. Then putting tips and habits in place that you know will help you stick to it (in my running training it was things like sometimes running with a friend, always going out first thing in the morning because I know any later in the day it's harder to motivate myself etc).
The Real Magic
The magic is in both firstly knowing the end goal, then in having a clear, structured plan to get there AND then taking consistent action.
Each training run felt achievable because I wasn't thinking about the whole 21km. Each one built my confidence and capability, just like each action you take in your business moves you closer to your goals.
Your Turn
So here's my question to you:
What's your "half marathon" goal in your business right now? The big scary one that feels overwhelming when you look at it as a whole?
Maybe it's:
Launching that new service
Hitting that revenue target
Finally getting your systems sorted
Whatever it is, remember – you don't have to run 21km today. You just need to take the next step in your training plan.
And if you need help creating that clear roadmap breaking down those big goals into manageable chunks and actually doing it - that's exactly what I do with my clients.
Here's to taking it one step at a time!
