Setting boundaries as a business owner

I’m not talking about the usual boundaries you might be used to hearing about. Hear me out…

As a business owner, it can sometimes feel like the work is never done, can't it? The endless to-do list, the constant stream of tasks, the perpetual feeling that there’s always something more you could be doing - it can be so demoralising and energy sapping.

Recently, a client of mine made a really interesting comment that really resonated with me. She said, "It's like, Litsa, you give me permission to be done."

Wow!

The reality is, for many business owners, the list never truly ends. However, for her, it does – at least for the time being – because we focus on creating a structured, thoughtful approach to her business activities.

Permission to be done.

In our sessions, we plan out the actions she will take to make tangible progress. These actions are always realistic, well-thought-out, and designed to have the most impact. This ensures that when she completes her prioritised tasks, she feels a sense of completion. The “extra stuff” – doesn’t weigh her down or dilute her focus.

So, I put it to you; how can you give yourself "permission to be done" this week?

Here are some prompts to think about:

Prioritise with Purpose: Identify the tasks that are truly important to your business’s progress. Not all tasks are created equal. Focus on those that will drive growth, improve efficiency, or enhance customer experience for example.

Set Realistic Goals: Break down your tasks into manageable chunks. Setting realistic, achievable goals can prevent you from feeling overwhelmed and help you maintain a steady pace without burning out.

Create a Structured Schedule: Allocate specific times for each task and don’t let those tasks go on for longer than necessary.

Acknowledge Your Achievements: Take time to acknowledge and celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem. Recognising your progress can boost your morale and motivate you to keep moving forward.

Delegate When Possible: Something draining you and doesn’t really need you specific skillset - can you get help?

Reflect and Adjust: Regularly reflect on your progress and be willing to adjust your plans as needed. Flexibility is sooo key to help you stay resilient and responsive to changes without feeling overwhelmed.

Wouldn’t it be great to get a sense of closure at the end of each week, knowing that you’ve made meaningful progress? Remember, it’s not about completing every single task you could possibly do, but about focusing on what truly matters and giving yourself permission to rest and recharge.

So, this week, take a moment to reflect on your priorities, set realistic goals, and embrace the satisfaction of being “done” with what truly matters. Your business – and your well-being – will thank you for it.
