From Beauty Industry Leader to Business Coach: Proven Tips for Solo Entrepreneurs
Before I set up my business to help solo business owners accelerate their growth, I headed up a busy customer care team responsible for looking after customer contacts from both direct consumers and pharmacies or stores buying our skincare products to sell on.
Sooooo much of what I learned when doing this role is relevant to informing how I help solo business owners today. I thought I would share a few examples of what I learned and how that helps me support my clients now.
GDPR knowledge. My team came into contact with and had to use a LOT of customer data. As such, I developed a strong knowledge of data protection rules in the UK. Knowing how you can and should manage your customers' or clients' data, what permissions you need to seek, how and when you can keep information, etc., is essential for solo business owners. This foundational knowledge has given me a basis to guide my clients in this area and ensure they are compliant while maintaining customer trust.
Proactive beats reactive every time. Given we were shipping to thousands of customers every day, sometimes things would inevitably go wrong. And every single time, I would make sure the team proactively reached out to customers to let them know and manage expectations. This applies in any business—if you said you were going to get something to them but won’t be able to, let them know as soon as you know. Don’t let them chase you—it's unprofessional and more likely to lead to an unhappy client/customer than if you were proactive in the first place. This approach is so important for overcoming overwhelm in business and helps in how to prioritize business ideas.
Keep it simple. When sending any kind of communication to customers, if there was any kind of ambiguity at all, it inevitably led to more questions and confusion. Keeping messages and communication simple means more efficiency and happier customers and clients in your business. Time management tips for entrepreneurs right there! I would say this also serves as a practical productivity hack for small business owners.
Keep clear, simple records of where you are up to with every client, whether that’s payments or conversations you are having with them. There is nothing more likely to swallow up time or annoy a client than having to repeat or hash over something they’ve already addressed.
Ensure consistency in every interaction. Whether it was how we handled inquiries or resolved issues, maintaining a consistent approach not only streamlined our processes but also built a strong sense of reliability among our customers. For example, having templates for the team to use when replying to frequently asked questions builds trust as well as efficiency. This can be the difference between a client singing your praises to others or not. This approach is key to how to stay motivated as a solopreneur - less time having to deal with impractical admin means happier/ more motivated you!
