Focus in Entrepreneurship: It's Not About Being a robot

If i say you need to 'focus' to succeed as a solo business owner - what does that mean to you?

I ask because I think it is often glorified as a relentless drive, a machine-like efficiency in ticking off tasks. Like being a robot!

But, we are not robots - obvs. We are gorgeously different people!

Today’s blog is all about why it's essential to have focus time, and why it's okay not to be a productivity machine, and how focus can manifest differently for different people.

The Human Side of Focus

Your Natural Rhythm

Not everyone operates at the same pace, and that's perfectly okay. Some solopreneurs find their stride in the quiet early hours, while others hit their peak in the afternoon. Understanding and embracing your natural rhythm is key. Focus time doesn't have to align with conventional 'work hours.' It's about finding those pockets of time when you're most naturally inclined to concentrate and be productive.

Quality Over Quantity

The idea that more hours equal more productivity is a myth.

In reality, the quality of your focus matters far more than the quantity. It's better to have a few hours of high-quality, concentrated work than to stretch yourself thin over longer periods. This not only gives better results but also helps you spend more time in your home life 💗

Focus is Personal

Focus looks different for everyone. For some, it might be a quiet room and a detailed to-do list. For others, it might involve background music and a more flexible approach to tasks. The key is to find what works for you. There's no one-size-fits-all formula for focus.

Why It's Okay Not to Be a robot

The Need for Downtime

Humans are not machines; we need rest and downtime. Constant work without breaks leads to burnout, not productivity. Allowing yourself time to rest and recharge is a non- negotiable. It's during these periods of rest that creativity often strikes and the solutions to problems can pop into our heads - switch off and take that walk!

The Role of Creativity

Unlike robots, humans possess creativity - especially YOU my creative solo business owner! And creativity doesn't thrive under constant, unyielding WORK. Sometimes, stepping away from it can provide a new perspective, leading to solutions and ideas. This creative process is as vital as focused work time.

Emotional and Mental Health

Acknowledging and respecting your emotional and mental health is all tied up in this too. There will be days when focus is harder to come by, and that's okay. Being kind to yourself and recognising your limits is a crucial part of sustainable entrepreneurship.

Different Forms of Focus

I said we’re all different - and we are! Here are some “focus types” I’ve come across - which one do you think you are!?

The Deep Diver

Some of you will be 'deep divers' - Deep Divers can immerse themselves in a task for hours without distraction.

The Sprinter

Others are 'sprinters' who work best in short, highly focused bursts. They may use techniques like the Pomodoro Technique, alternating focused work with short breaks.

The Juggler

Then there are 'jugglers,' who manage multiple tasks in a day, switching focus as needed. This flexibility can be a strength, allowing them to adapt quickly to changing demands (but be careful of too much “task switching you guys!).

The Reflective Thinker

Some thrive on reflection and strategic thinking. Their focus time might involve more planning and brainstorming than executing tasks.

So, focus is not about being a robot or emulating a machine; it's about understanding your unique strengths and rhythms. It's about quality, creativity, and sustainability. By recognising and respecting all those things, you can find a rhythm that not only drives your business forward but also aligns with your personal well-being and work style.
